CANCER INFORMATION
ACS has
local and state units across the country, and can provide information on cancer,
speakers, referrals and community services and programs. Visit ACS's website
to find a chapter near you or check your local phone book for listings. Resources
for cancer survivors and families also available through ACS as Living
With Cancer.
Founded in 1993, Avon's Crusade is the largest corporate supporter of breast health programs in America. Its mission is to provide more women -- particularly low-income, minority and older women -- with direct access to breast cancer education and early detection screening services, at little or no cost.
CDC directs five major cancer program areas including breast and cervical, prostate, colorectal, and skin cancers.
NBCC is a coalition of individuals and organizations dedicated to eradicating breast cancer through advocacy and action. NBCC coordinates Project LEAD, an intensive 4 day science program to empower activists to fully participate everywhere that breast cancer research decisions are being made.
NCI offers a vast amount of free publications via pamphlets, booklets, videos and reports on a multitude of cancer related topics. Most of these publications are also offered in multiple languages. 1-800-4-CANCER (1-800-422-6237).
The Campaign partners with a core group of women's, health, and cancer organizations, to develop and disseminate information about HPV, cervical cancer and available detection methods to women throughout the United States. The goal of the Campaign is to reduce the number of preventable deaths caused each year by cervical cancer through increased education, outreach and communication between women and their health care providers.
NCCS is a grassroots network of individuals and organizations working on behalf
of people with all types of cancer. Founded in 1986 of, by, and for cancer
survivors, NCCS has grown into a nationwide network of independent organizations
and individuals working in the area of cancer support and information. NCCS
offers a free Cancer Survival
Toolbox, a set of six audio programs designed to give cancer survivors
skills for communicating, negotiating, decision making, problem solving, finding
information, and standing up for their rights.
CHILDREN'S HEALTH INSURANCE
The Prevention Guidelines Database is a comprehensive compendium of all of
the official guidelines and recommendations published by the US Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for the prevention of diseases, injuries,
and disabilities. This compendium was developed to allow public health practitioners
and others to quickly access the full set of CDC's guidelines from a single
point, regardless of where they were originally published.
Making the Grade is a national grant program supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation supporting state-community partnerships to establish comprehensive school-based health centers. Twelve states receive funding for planning grants through this program. This website provides resources on these 12 grantee states as well as resources for school based health center planning in other states.
The National Assembly is a nonprofit private association representing school-based health care providers and supporters. Created in 1995, the National Assembly's primary mission is to promote accessible, quality school-based primary health and mental health care for children and youth through interdisciplinary and collaborative efforts. The website includes comprehensive resources on establishing school-based health centers, standards and guidelines for care, information on financing, implementing, and evaluating school based health centers, and links to other resources.
NCCIC provides information concerning child care services and assistance programs for low-income families to the states, territories and tribes, policymakers, providers, and the public.
GENERAL HEALTH ISSUES

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention's searchable database of free information on more than 200 diseases and health issues.
CHID is a database produced by health-related agencies of the Federal Government. The value of this database is that it lists a wealth of health promotion and education materials and program descriptions that are not indexed elsewhere.
healthfinder® is a gateway to selected consumer health and human services
information resources provided by U.S. government agencies and other organizations
serving the public interest. Featured resources include online publications,
clearinghouses, databases, web sites, and support and self-help groups, as
well as the government agencies and not-for-profit organizations that produce
reliable information for the public. Launched in April 1997, healthfinder® served
Internet users over 1.7 million times in its first year online.
The National Health Information Center (NHIC) is a health information referral
service. NHIC puts health professionals and consumers who have health questions
in touch with those organizations that are best able to provide answers. This
website includes a yearly calendar of health observances, such as October-Breast
Cancer Awareness Month and a directory of toll-free 800#s for locating health
information.

MENTAL HEALTH

Operating under the auspices of the School Mental Health Project, the UCLA Center for Mental Health in Schools is one of the two national training and technical assistance centers focused on mental health in schools. The center approaches mental health and psychosocial concerns from the broad perspective of addressing barriers to learning and promoting healthy development.
CSMHA at the University of Maryland at Baltimore provides leadership and technical
assistance to advance effective interdisciplinary school-based mental health
programs by providing support to schools and communities in the development
of programs that are accessible, family-centered, culturally sensitive, and
responsive to local needs.
The CMHS leads Federal efforts to treat mental illnesses by promoting mental health and by preventing the development or worsening of mental illness when possible. The CMHS Knowledge Exchange Network (KEN) provides information about mental health via a toll-free telephone number (800-789-2647), their web site and more than 200 publications. CMHS developed KEN for users of mental health services and their families, the general public, policy makers, providers, and the media.
