Communities in Crisis (n49)

Subject

English

Objective

Students will explore the different ways communities respond to crisis. Students will identify the impact an individual can make when the community is in crisis.

Time Needed

3-4 weeks

Materials

The Crucible, the play by Arthur Miller

Lesson

Students write about the worst thing that has happened in their country that they can remember. Many, if not all, students will write about Sept. 11. Consider the response our nation has had since that crisis, both in the days immediately following and longterm. What positive developments came out of that crisis? What concerns about our nation do you have as a result of our response? This is the hook to get students into reading about the Salem witch trials through The Crucible, and from there to use that literature and the historical context of its authorship to reflect on today's national climate. What kinds of responses are necessary from individual citizens for a community to react to crisis and attack in the most beneficial ways?
