Remember September 11

(6-12)

Memorial to 9/11 (n33)

Subject

All

Objective

Give students the opportunity to express creatively their feelings toward the events of 9/11.

Time Needed

One class period

Materials

Construction paper, scissors, glue, tape, markers

Lesson

Cut different colors of construction paper in squares that are approximately 6”x6”. Give each student a piece of construction paper along with the following instructions:

The square you have represents one piece in a quilt that we are going to create to memorialize (remember) the events of September 11. Using the materials that are provided (construction paper, glue, scissors), create a quilt square that represents your feelings, attitudes, concerns or ideas about 9/11. Your square may be a figurative or literal interpretation of your feelings. You must stay inside the dimensions of the square and all your work should be flat on the surface.

When students have completed their squares, glue onto a larger piece of construction paper to look like squares on a quilt. If you have access to a laminating machine, laminate the entire quilt. Display in your room or the hallway. If the entire school participates in this activity, combine the quilts to make one memorial from the entire school.
