Remember September 11

(K-5)

Sending Liberty and Faith Across the Nation (n18)

Subject

Social studies

Objective

Through the sending of patriotically-theme stuffed bears across the nation, Americans can share the experiences they had on September 11 and how their lives have changed in its aftermath (3-5) and/or the ideal world they would like to live in (K-2).

Time Needed

Long-term project

Materials

2 stuffed bears, letters, journal, box, pictures

Lesson

  1. Patriotically decorate two stuffed bears, Liberty and Faith.
  2. Decorate a home for the bears, the box in which they will be sent.
  3. Draft a letter relating the class’ feelings about the event and asking questions of the bears’ recipients. Include pictures of the class and a journal for reactions in the box.
  4. Send them across the country asking people to enter thoughts into the journal and share pictures of the bears’ visit with them.
  5. When the bears return, in about four months, create a scrapbook of their adventures and America’s feelings about the tragedy of September 11 and its aftermath.

Enchancements

  1. Spend time considering to whom the bears should be sent and why
  2. Spend a class session on developing the questions that should be asked in the letter
