Subject

English, language arts

Objective

To record your memories of that day and to write a journal to use with students in the future.

Time Needed

Four to five class periods

Materials

Paper, pencil or pen, dictionary or computer and printer

Lesson

(Day One) The following points will be used in an oral discussion prior to the assignment-

1) Where were you when you heard the news?
2) What was your gut reaction when you realized the news was true?
3) How do you think this will affect your future, the future of America & of the world?

Teacher can begin discussion by saying that when historic events occur (Pearl Harbor, assassination of JFK), celebrities are often asked to write down their thoughts for a quote in the news to be used for posterity. Your answers to the same types of questions will be compiled in a 9/11 memories album. This will be used as a history book for students in the future who weren't around to witness this historic event.

The students can use the remainder of Day One to begin their graphic organizer.

(Day Two) Complete the graphic organizer & begin the rough draft.

(Day Three) Finish the rough draft, begin editing

(Day Four & Five) Work on final draft

Enhancements

  1. Consider the use of body movement, dance to enhance the exploration of memories that would go into the journal
