Types of emergencies and crises your plan should address

Prepare step-by-step plans for responding to emergencies and crises such as fights on school grounds, public demonstrations, deaths, disasters, medical situations, violent incidents, traffic and utility problems. Also consider hazards unique to your community. Are there airports or railroads nearby? Are animal disturbances, such as lion, bear or rabid animal attacks, or chemical contaminations possibilities? Are natural disasters such as hurricanes, floods, fires or tornadoes likely?

During this planning, school districts should identify a list of possible emergencies and crises and determine special issues and tactics for each one. For example, earthquakes in some communities might be likely, yet unpreventable. However, school districts might be able to mitigate structural damage or injuries by requiring specific building enhancements.
